My Top 5 Marvel Cinematic Universe Films

With the end of the “Infinity Saga” arriving in less than a week, I thought I would write a short little feature on my top five favourite films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Before we get started, know that these are my top five movies and you’re allowed to have a different opinion. So without further ado, let’s get started.

1. Captain America: Civil War

Captain America: Civil War has to be my favourite film in the MCU, seeing our beloved heroes go up against each other opposed to the main villain was new and exciting. This is a film purely about the characters and their ideologies, the stakes are very real and because we’re already invested with these characters, you genuinely care about what happens.

The action is fantastic and the emotional impact is very real, like Winter Soldier it ends on a note that shaped the MCU going forward. The Russo Brothers managed to make a comic book movie that feels grounded and real, whilst balancing all these iconic characters at once and it’s a feat that should be praised.

2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Captain America: The Winter Soldier felt like a turning point in the MCU, it wasn’t your typical superhero film. It had a great plot that had consequences and repercussions and developed Captain America into a much more interesting character. It was the first time in the MCU that it didn’t just feel like your paint-by-numbers superhero film. It was a spy film essentially that had great action sequences and the fight choreography was amazing. It has everything going for it and had a lasting impact that would affect the MCU going forward.

3. The Avengers

avengers

I was 13 years old when I saw the first Avengers filmand I remember being blown away. Watching Captain America and Iron Man square up to each other whilst Thor is in the background making snide comments was the best thing I’d ever seen at the time. Seeing Bruce Banner walk towards a giant flying alien head on, only for him to transform into the Hulk and take it down with one punch was astonishing.  Every little interaction between these iconic heroes is fantastic and watching them fight alongside each other was like nothing I’d ever seen before. This movie took a massive risk and it paid off, not to mention the score is fantastic. Alan Silvestri’s Avengers Theme is one of the most iconic musical themes in cinema.

4. Thor: Ragnarok

thor ragnarok

Thor: Ragnarok was completely different from any other Thor film and that’s a good thing. The previous Thor movies are part of the weaker films of the MCU and the character really wasn’t that interesting. Ragnarok changed this. The film took inspiration from Guardians of the Galaxy and had fun with the source material. Taika Watiti who’s known for his humour and wit, perfectly implements that into Ragnarok, the film is a blast from start to finish. It’s also one of the funniest, if not the funniest, Marvel movies to exist. With colourful and vibrant visuals along with the 80s electrical score, Thor: Ragnarok is an absolute joy to sit through. There are multiple scenes that could be mistaken for paintings, that’s how stunning the film is at points.

5. Iron Man

iron man

Iron Man. The movie that started this whole “cinematic universe” idea we see in Hollywood today. Robert Downey Jr. stars as Tony Stark and he is amazing in this film,  he is perfect in this role and it’s impossible to see anyone else playing the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist. The film has its action and humour and seeing Tony Stark become the hero we’re waiting for him to be is a thrill. Despite it being over 10 years old, the CGI holds up very well, in fact, it’s better than a lot of movies today. It’s crazy to watch this film and see how far the MCU has come, this cinematic universe started with a man in a cave. I think simply put, Iron Man is just one of the coolest films to be released.

There you have it, my favourite films in the MCU. It’s been a crazy journey and seeing how far these films have come is nothing short of amazing. I’ve grown up with these films and these characters, and with Endgame releasing this week, it’s going to be very emotional seeing it come to an end.
